Glass separatory funnel

Laboratory funnels are used in chemistry and other scientific experiments for funneling liquids or powders into containers with narrow openings. They are typically made of glass, or plastic, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on their application. Buchner funnels are used for vacuum filtration, while separatory funnels are used for separating immiscible liquids.

 



Powder Funnels

Powder funnels are specialized for transferring dry powders or granular materials into containers with smaller openings, such as bottles, vials, or test tubes. These funnels typically have a large bore, allowing for fast pouring of powders. The design of powder funnels aims to minimize the potential for spills, wastage, and contamination that can occur when pouring powders directly from a container into a small opening.

Addition/Dropping Funnels

Addition or dropping funnels are commonly used in organic and inorganic chemistry experiments, as well as in pharmaceutical and biotech research for addition reactions. They are long, cylindrical, and usually made of glass. The addition funnel is typically attached to a flask or reaction vessel via a ground glass joint, and the reagent is added slowly to the reaction mixture through a stopcock or a valve at the bottom of the funnel. This allows for the precise addition of reagents and helps to control the reaction conditions.

Ace addition funnels

The Ace addition funnels possess an angled stopcock position for easier manipulation. They have a long glass body, pressure-equalizing arm, double-scale graduations, and precise needle-valve adjustment. Additionally, the threaded stopcock ensures that there are no leaks during the addition process.

Duran® Dropping Funnel

Dropping funnels are a style of addition funnel that enables precise, uniform dosing of liquid supply to a reaction mixture. Duran dropping funnels are graduated with a ground taper joint and stopcocks equipped with a retaining device. They are available with or without a pressure equalization tube at the lower end, which prevents both negative and positive pressure in the reaction vessels.

Separatory Funnels

Separatory or Separating funnels are a type of labware commonly used to separate immiscible liquids with different densities, such as oil and water. They are typically made of glass and have a conical shape with a stopcock at the bottom to allow for the separation of the two liquids. The mixture of immiscible liquids is added to the separating funnel, and after settling, the stopcock is opened to drain the lower layer of liquid. This process can be repeated until the two liquids are completely separated. Separating funnels are commonly used in organic chemistry, such as in the extraction of compounds from reaction mixtures, as well as in industrial processes for the purification of chemicals.

Nalgene® separatory funnels are made of polypropylene material with a TFE stopcock, and these materials, being intact do not require any lubrication. These funnels exhibit good compatibility with a wide range of solutions for separation.

Buchner Funnels

Buchner funnels are made of porcelain, glass, or plastic. They are used in combination with a vacuum pump and either a fritted glass disc or filter paper to quickly separate a solid from a liquid in a chemical mixture. The Buchner funnel has a flat, perforated base that serves as a support for the fritted disc or filter paper. The liquid mixture is poured into the funnel, and the vacuum is applied from below, which pulls the liquid through the filter and leaves the solid behind. This process is commonly used in laboratory settings for the separation and filtration of compounds and impurities in chemistry experiments. Scienceware® Buchner funnel Made of polypropylene or high-density polyethylene, these one-piece Buchner funnels have a sealed-in coarse porosity polyethylene filter plate, enabling good retention and fast flow under vacuum. They can be used with or without filter paper.

Coors™ Buchner funnels

Coors™ Buchner funnels are made of fully glazed porcelain and are provided with fixed perforated plates.

Synthware™ Buchner funnel

These Borosilicate glass Buchner funnels have a sealed-in perforated glass disc to support the filter medium of choice. This design solves the contamination problem of fritted discs and also the blindness problem with ceramic.

Pressure Filter Funnels

Pressure filter funnels are sealed at the top. They are commonly made of glass and consist of a cylindrical tube with a fritted glass filter on one end and a seal on the other. The pressure filter funnel is commonly used in laboratory settings for the separation of suspended solids from liquids. The solid is retained by the fritted glass filter, while the liquid flows through the filter and can be collected in a flask or other container. Pressure filter funnels are particularly useful for filtering large volumes of liquid or very fine particles that may clog other types of filters.

Aldrich® pressure filter funnels

Aldrich® pressure filter funnels are made of glass and provided with a funnel, cap, and pinch clamp. They are useful for filtering air- and moisture-sensitive compounds quickly under inert gas.

Ace pressure filter/drying funnels

Ace pressure filter/drying funnels are used for drying air-sensitive compounds with inert gas or a simple pressure filter funnel. The filter contains an O-Ring joint that connects the cap to the body to provide a larger opening. The joint is secured with a pinch clamp. The unique design enables pressure or vacuum to be applied alternately or simultaneously for fast filtration or drying.
