General description

Amberlyst A21 is a neutral ion-exchange resin and a solid base which catalyses three-component reaction of aldehyde and malononitrile with various active methylene compounds to synthesize a range of pyran annulated heterocycles. Use of the solid base is to generate a highly green protocol by eliminating chromatographic purification involving hazardous organic solvents, and for easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst. Amberlyst A21 is used as a fluid bed resin. Fluid bed reactor allows gel-type beads, of polymer-supported (PS) organic reactions, to be used in a flow system. The Michael reaction between methyl 1-oxoindan-2-carboxylate and methyl vinyl ketone in toluene can be attained through a fluid bed of Amberlyst A21 at 50°C.

Application

Amberlyst® A21 free base was used in catalyst preparation.
