Gene Information

human ... N/A(796)

General description

The gene CALC1 (calcitonin 1) is mapped to human chromosome 11. CALC1 encodes for preprocalcitonin. Preprocalcitonin is cleaved by endopeptidase at the amino-terminal to produce procalcitonin. Procalcitonin works as a peptide hormone and is mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung. Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin. Recombinant human procalcitonin produced in Escherichia coli is a single, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 116 amino acids with a molecular weight of 12,796 Daltons.

Application

Procalcitonin human has been used in in vitro vascular permeability assay.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Procalcitonin is a prohormone of calcitonin. Levels of unprocessed procalcitonin rise significantly after bacterial infection, trauma or shock. Procalcitonin is also associated with systemic complications in humans suffering from acute pancreatitis.

Physical form

Lyophilized from a 10 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.5.

Reconstitution

Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in sterile H?O to a concentration of 0.1 mg/ml.
