General description

Antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Often used in culture media to control growth of microorganisms. Inhibits initiation, elongation, and termination of protein synthesis in prokaryotes and induces misreading of the genetic code.

Preparation Note

Autoclaved media should be cooled to ≤55°C before adding streptomycin.

Reconstitution

Following reconstitution, sterilize by filtration through a 0.22 µm pore-size filter, aliquot and freeze (-20°C). Stock solutions are stable for up to 3 months at -20°C.
