General description

Insulin is a two-chain peptide hormone consisting of 51 amino acids, and its structure corresponds to native insulin produced in vivo by the beta cells of the pancreas. The A-chain is composed of 21 amino acids, and the B-chain is composed of 30 amino acids. Insulin (Pork) USP reference standard is provided as delivered and specified by the issuing Pharmacopoeia. All information provided in support of this product, including SDS and any product information leaflets have been developed and issued under the Authority of the issuing Pharmacopoeia. For further information and support please go to the website of the issuing Pharmacopoeia.

Application

Insulin (Pork) USP Reference standard, intended for use in specified quality tests and assays as specified in the USP compendia. Also, for use with USP monographs such as:
  • Insulin
  • Insulin Injection
  • Isophane Insulin Suspension
  • Extended Insulin Zinc Suspension
  • Prompt Insulin Zinc Suspension
  • Insulin Zinc Suspension

Biochem/physiol Actions

Two-chain polypeptide hormone produced by the β-cells of pancreatic islets. Its molecular weight is ~5800 Da. The α and β chains are joined by two interchain disulfide bonds. The α chain contains an intrachain disulfide bond. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat.
