Application

Ytterbium(III) nitrate pentahydrate can be used as a precursor to synthesize:
  • Er–Mn: Yb3Al5O12 (YbAG) nanocrystals by nonaqueous sol–gel method. Yb3+–Mn2+ dimer sensitization significantly enhances the green upconversion emissions.
  • CaTiO3:Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles by coprecipitation method. These nanoparticles are used in the optical monitoring of mineralization and demineralization of bone scaffolds.
It can also be used as a dopant to prepare BiVO4 semiconductor photocatalysts with enhanced upconversion properties.
