General description

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a halocarbon commonly used as an industrial chlorinated solvent. It can also be used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals and refrigerants.

Application

Trichloroethylene can be used:
  • As a solvent in the C- and O-glycosylation reactions of tetrahydropyran acetals and 2-deoxyglucopyranosides to prepare SN2 products.
  • In the chemical industry for the synthesis of polyvinyl chloride, chloroacetic acid, hydrofluorocarbons, pharmaceuticals, insecticides, fungicides, fire retardants, fertilizer, and synthetic rubber.
  • As a starting material in the synthesis of dichloroacetylene.
  • As a reagent in the preparation of alkynic ethers.
  • As a reagent for ethynylation and vinylation process.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), common industrial solvents, are among the most frequent contaminants found in groundwater supplies. Due to the potential toxicity and carcinogenicity of chlorinated ethylenes, knowledge about their transformation potential is important in evaluating their environmental fate.

Electron donor limitations likely reduce microbial enhanced trichloroethene (TCE) dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) dissolution. This study quantitatively examined the relation between the DNAPL dissolution enhancement and the electron donor supply rate. An experiment used diffusion-cells with a 5.5 cm
