General description
Ginseng comprises of saponins called ginsenosides, acidic polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds.
Ginseng is an important herbal remedy extensively used to improve cardiac health and circulation. Treatment with Panax ginseng has shown to improve cardiac performance. It also increases protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion damage by enhancing nitric oxide (NO) release.
Application
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) was used to test its protective effects against mitomycin C induced micronuclei in mice. It is used to test the adaptogenic and anti-amnesic properties of evolvulus alsinoides in rodents.
Ginseng root from Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng) has been used as control in hyperlocomotor activity studies and adaptogenic activity screening in mice.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ginseng is an effective immune modulator and improves phagocytic functionality of macrophages and stimulates natural killer cells. Ginseng elicits anticancer and anti-diabetic functionality. Ginseng may provide protection in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson′s disease and Alzheimer′s disease. Ginseng improves liver regeneration and is effective in treating hepatocellular carcinoma.
