General description

DDX3X, DEAD (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp) box polypeptide 3, X-linked, is a member of the DEAD box family of proteins. Characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), DEAD box proteins are putative RNA helicases. They are implicated in a number of cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Based on their distribution patterns, some members of this family are believed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. DDX3X is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase and acts as a co-factor for XPO1-mediated nuclear export of incompletely spliced HIV-1 Rev RNAs. DDX3X is also involved in HIV-1 replication and interacts specifically with hepatitis C virus core protein resulting in a change in intracellular location.
