Iodine trichloride (ICl₃) is an inorganic compound that is commonly used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It is also used in the halogenation of organic compounds, and oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds.

Application

Iodine trichloride can be used:     

• In the halogenation of aromatic compounds to prepare corresponding chlorinated derivatives.      
• To oxidize primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.
