General description

Iodine trichloride (ICl3) is an inorganic compound that is commonly used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It is also used in the halogenation of organic compounds, and oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds.

Application

Iodine trichloride can be used:     
  • In the halogenation of aromatic compounds to prepare corresponding chlorinated derivatives.      
  • To oxidize primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.
