General description

Sodium borohydride is considered as a selective reducing agent due to its ability to selectively reduce aldehydes and ketones into their corresponding alcohols in the presence of other functional groups such as nitro, ester, amide, lactone, epoxide, and nitriles that are otherwise susceptible to reduction. It is being considered as a promising candidate for hydrogen storage applications.

Application

Sodium borohydride may be used as a reductant and hydrogen source for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to the corresponding alkenes in the presence of nickel nanoparticles generated in situ from nickel chloride and methanol. It can also be used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles from gold chloride.
