General description

Aluminum hydroxide (Al (OH)₃) is an amphoteric compound, soluble in both base and acids. It is used as a precursor for alumina catalysts and flame-retardant materials. Aluminum hydroxide is primarily used as a feedstock to produce other aluminum compounds, including sodium aluminate, activated alumina, aluminum nitrate, zeolites, polyaluminum chloride, aluminum chloride, and specialty calcined aluminas.

Application

Aluminum hydroxide may be used:

• In the preparation of Li₂O–Al₂O₃–SiO₂ (LAS) glass-ceramic systems.
• As a aluminum precursor in the preparation of alumina.
