Application

Ethidium homodimer I solution has been used to check membrane integrity in sperms.
Stains ssDNA, dsDNA, RNA, oligonucleotides, and triplex DNA structures.
Used to detect DNA in solution.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ethidium homodimer is a red fluorescent dye. It cannot cross an intact plasma membrane, but can easily pass through a damaged plasma membrane. Ethidium homodimer is used to check membrane integrity.
One molecule of EthD-1 will non-selectively bind four base pairs in dsDNA.
