General description

Dimethyl sulfoxide is an organosulfur, commonly used as a polar solvent that can dissolve a wide range of polar and non-polar compounds. It is also utilized as a reaction reagent in several well-known processes, including swern oxidation, 2a pfitzner-moffatt oxidation, 2b, and the corey-chaykovsky reaction.

Application

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been used:
  • in the preparation of ethyl 4-[18F]fluorobenzoate.
  • in the culture medium for 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.
  • as a solvent in chemical synthesis.
  • to dissolve and prepare stock solutions of small molecules, drugs, and chemical compounds for various assays and experiments.

Caution

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.
