General description

4-Nitrophenol is a phenolic compound present as a chemical intermediate and breakdown product during the production of organophosphorus insecticide derivatives of parathion. It is an intermediate during the synthesis of paracetamol. 4-Nitrophenol is a chromogenic catalytic by product of the synthetic substrate 4-nitrophenyl phosphate. It is majorly used as a reference standard in alkaline phosphatase assay. 4-Nitrophenol is nonbiodegradable and its derivatives are used for herbicide and fungicide production.

Application

4-Nitrophenol solution has been used:
  • in the generation of standard curve for quantifying alkaline phosphatase activity of mesenchymal stem cells
  • bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs)
  • for quantifying β-hexosaminidase activity in HeLa cells
  • as a standard for calorimetric determination of alkaline phosphatase activity at 405 nm
  • for assessing the β-hexosamindase activity

Preparation Note

Prepared as a 1.39 mg/ml solution suitable for use as a calibrator in alkaline phosphatase assays (such as Bessey-Lowry-Brock method) using p-nitrophenol phosphate as a substrate.
