Application

Indoles and aldehydes can undergo condensation reaction in the presence of zirconium (IV) oxynitrate hydrate to form bis- or tris(indolyl)methane products, which can undergo dehydrogenation to yield conjugated chromophores to be used as pH indicators (pH range 8–10).
