General description

Porous polymer sorbents are inert, hydrophobic with large surface area. These sorbents retain volatile compounds, water and solvent vapours. This is advantageous if sample is from atmosphere with high content of water and solvent vapours. They are most suitable for trapping toxic agents with high molecular weight and non-volatile substances like pesticides. They are also suitable for sampling many compounds sorbed by charcoal and silica gel. Tenax® TA is basically synthetically produced polymer based on the 2,6-diphenylene oxide is more efficient in the recovery of higher molecular weight compounds. It is suitable for both polar and nonpolar analytes.
Tenax porous polymers, based on 2,6-diphenyl-p-phenylene oxide, is widely used as an adsorbent in both air collection and purge trap applications. Its unique structure provides alternate and desirable adsorption/desorption characteristics compared to other porous polymers.

Application

Tenax® TA is suitable as an adsorbent used for air sampling, it was examined for its potential to form artifacts with Ozone at environmental concentrations, which was then quantitatively analysed using GC-MS analysis. It is also used in adsorbent columns suitable for recovering volatile compounds analysed by GC.
