脳由来神経栄養因子（BDNF）遺伝子は、ヒト染色体11p14.1にマップされています。BDNFは成長因子の神経栄養因子ファミリーのメンバーです。この遺伝子は、前駆体タンパクproBDNFをコードします。Mature BDNF（mBDNF）は、proBDNFの翻訳後切断により合成されます。proBDNFおよびmBDNFはいずれも細胞シグナル伝達に重要な役割を果たしています。

生物化学的／生理学的作用
脳由来神経栄養因子（BDNF）は、ヒトにおける海馬の機能および言語性のエピソード記憶に関与しています。このため、BDNF遺伝子発現の変動はこれらの神経機能を変化させます。また、BDNFは血管機能に重要な役割を果たしており、特定の受容体トロポミオシン関連キナーゼB（TrkB）を介して血管新生に関与しています。これは、アルツハイマー病の発生機序に関与しています。ProBDNFは、p75神経栄養因子受容体と相互作用し、海馬において長期抑圧をもたらします。
