일반 설명

The smoothelin (SMTN) gene is mapped to human chromosome 22q12.2. This gene codes for a specific cytoskeletal protein that is associated with smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Alternative splicing of this gene results in two isoforms namely, smoothelin-A and smoothelin-B. Smoothelin-A is highly expressed in visceral smooth muscle, whereas smoothelin-B is specifically expressed in the vascular smooth muscle cells.

Smoothelin-A plays a vital role in functional contractility of the intestinal smooth muscle. Smoothelin serves as a marker of end-stage differentiation of smooth muscle cells as it is expressed only in contractile smooth muscle cells. Abnormal expression of the gene has been associated with the development of colonic inertia and cerebral infarction (CI).
