General description

Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are the building blocks of eukaryotic membranes. It is also found at high levels in C. elegans lipid extracts. It is a strong bilayer-forming lipid. PC is an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon.

Application

Egg PC has been used:
  • as lipid standard to evaluate the chromatographic column characteristics
  • as a component in the surfactant comixture for theαVβ3 targeted nanoparticles
  • in liposome preparation

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance. It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
