General description

Sodium hydroxide also known as caustic soda is a water soluble base with a wide range of industrial applications. Purification of diatomite with NaOH enhances its ability to adsorb basic dyes. NaOH when coupled with thermal desorption is reported to improve the degradation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in PCB contaminated soil. The efficiency of the aqueous solution of sodium citrate (Na3Ci) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to dissolve SO2 has been investigated.

Application

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) has been used to trap the hydrogen bromide gas released during the photo-bromination of 4-nitro-o-xylene.
It may be used in the following processes:
  • Boehm′s titration
  • dissolution testing
  • pH adjustment during the silver nanoparticles synthesis
