Application

Cholesterol was used to prepare immune-stimulating complexes to enhance cellular and humoral responses. It was incorporated in animal feed to study the effect of cholesterol-rich diet.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cholesterol is a lipid makes up about 20-25% of the structural components of the cell membranes. It determines the fluidity and permeability of the membrane, making it permeable to water but not to ions and protons. Cholesterol also regulates the functions of the transporters and signaling proteins present on the plasma membrane. The major sites of cholesterol synthesis are small intestine and liver.
Major component of all biological membranes; ~25% of total brain lipid is cholesterol.

Unesterified cholesterol is an essential structural component of the plasma membrane of every cell. During evolution, this membrane came to play an additional, highly specialized role in the central nervous system (CNS) as the major architectural component of compact myelin.

Articles

Biosynthesis of cholesterol generally takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatic cells and begins with acetyl- CoA, which is mainly derived from an oxidation reaction in the mitochondria. Acetyl-CoA and acetoacetyl-CoA are converted to 3-hydroxy- 3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) by HMG-CoA synthase.

Protocols

This procedure applies to products that have a specification for the enzymatic activity of cholesterol oxidase. This assay is NOT to be used to assay Cholesterol Oxidase from Schizophyllum commune (Discontinued Product Number C7274) and from Brevibacterium sp. (Discontinued Product Number C8153).

Our team of scientists has experience in all areas of research including Life Science, Material Science, Chemical Synthesis, Chromatography, Analytical and many others.
