General description

The gene HAT1 (histone acetyltransferase 1) is mapped to human chromosome 2q31.1. It is a key member of HATs. It is an evolutionarily conserved protein and a type B histone acetyltransferase.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

HAT1 (histone acetyltransferase 1) is responsible for histone acetylation, H4K5 (histone 4 lysine 5) and H4K12. MicroRNA miR-486 targets HAT1, thereby inhibiting the expression of ABCA1 (ATP-binding cassette transporter A1). These events suppress cholesterol efflux in THP-1 (human monocytic cell line) macrophages. In esophageal carcinoma, HAT1 is responsible for cell growth. Absence of HAT1 causes G2/M cell cycle arrest, leading to growth inhibition. HAT1 also controls DNA repair by homologous recombination.
