PE represents the main phospholipid class bacteria and the second most abundant in eukaryotic cells. PE is zwitterionic. PE is synthesized by Kennedy pathway.

18:3 PE has been used in the preparation of liposomes. It may be suitable for use in the characterization of contact angle in monolayer formation.
