General description

Streptavidin is a tetrameric protein with a globular structure.[1] It is isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces avidinii. Streptavidin is highly thermostable and is resistant to extreme pH, organic solvents, denaturants, detergents, and enzymatic degradation.[2]

Application

Streptavidin has been used to saturate supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) during its preparation.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Streptavidin is widely used as a linker in biotechnology as it forms a very stable bond under well-preserved biological conditions.[1] It exhibits a high binding affinity for biotin.[2] This feature of streptavidin makes it a very efficient and versatile tool for the development of novel sensors. Streptavidin-biotin system is also used in various chemical and biological applications such as detection, labeling, and drug delivery.[4]
