General description

Potassium carbonate is an inorganic base that is used in the alkylation of phenols and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, as well as the generation of sulfur and phosphorus ylides. It is also used to dry organic solvents.

Application

Potassium carbonate can be used as a catalyst in the:
  • Markovnikov addition reactions.
  • Suzuki cross-coupling reactions.
It can also be used as a base for the N-arylation of benzamides via C-N coupling reaction.
