General description

L-Tyrosine, an essential amino acid, plays a vital role in biochemical and cell culture research. In biochemical studies, L-Tyrosine is significant as a precursor to neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, which influence cellular communication and play a role in mood, attention, and energy levels. It also contributes to the synthesis of thyroid hormones, regulating metabolic processes. L-Tyrosine is employed to support cell growth and protein synthesis, facilitating experiments on cell maintenance and repair, making it a valuable tool in biochemical and cell culture investigations.

Application

L-Tyrosine has been used as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium for culturing SY5Y neuroblastoma cells for stable isotope labeling of amino acids on cell culture (SILAC).

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Tyrosine consists of a polar side chain and is a non-essential amino acid. It is utilized by cells to synthesize proteins that are involved in signal transduction. L-Tyrosine acts as a receiver of phosphate groups that are transferred by kinases.
